About Us

D'Arcy kennels is owned and operated by Mick D'Arcy.  Born in Cashel, Co Tipperary, he got the greyhound-bug in the mid 1950s as a young boy.  He was taken to Thurles for the final of the Tipperary Cup and watched the Cashel dog Bella Re win at 33/1; having wagered a half-crown on the winner; the rest is history!

In 1985, we moved to the States.  Mick worked with Pat Dalton’s kennel in Wonderland. That partnership brought an involvement with many notables hounds; Tipp Lad, Ks Broadway and Whisper Wit. Other Wonderland stars, 1989 Derby winner Rapido Gal. The Derby final was only her 13th race, she entered the event with only 8 races. In a thrilling race she caught Bartie from an 8L lead in the final stride at the winning line.

In 1994, we moved to St Petersburg, Florida to begin a 12-year relationship with the Greys dogs of Jack and Mary Butler.  This partnership accounted for over 20 Stakes wins and 4 All Americans.  The first win was Greys Mardi Gras’ victory in the 1995 Distance Classic at Derby Lane, a four-way photo-finish; one of the closest in racing history, separating the winners and losers by a nose, nose and a head.  This photo can be seen in the Greyhound Hall of Fame.  Mardi Gras went on to run second in the St Pete Derby and Tampa Derby.

In 1998, as a gift for a very successful season, Mary gave Mick a pup from her (future) Hall of Fame brood-bitch Greys Julianna.  Mary placed 4 unopened envelopes on the table; differentiated only by letters C, D, F and H, which were the ear-marks of the pups in the Fortress Greys Julianna litter.  Dad chose the F envelope (for Frances; his wife), and the dog Greys Free Style was certainly a lucky one . . . she went onto win the Tampa Juvenile and the Derby Lane Distance Classic in 2000 . . . thank goodness Frances begins with an F’.

In both 1998 and 2000, the D'Arcy & Butler team won the Derby Lane Classic double; winning the Sprint Classic and Distance Classic during the 6-month season.  In 1998 the double was Greys Outbound and Greys Betsy Ross (both All Americans) and 2 years later the champion duo was Greys Starquest and his own Greys Free Style.  He is one of only a handful of trainers to achieve this honor.

In recent times, the D'Arcy & Greymeadow partnership led to the Derby Lane Million Dollar race winner's circle with Greys Calibrator.  Callie competed throughout the Million like a consumate professional; winning all but the quarter-final and breaking the track record in the process. On the night of the final, she did not disappoint and delivered a picture perfect race; breaking well, clearing the first bend and extending her lead to 4L.  She was cheered home by a crowd of friends from the US and Ireland.

2007 - 2008 has been successful for our family, with major victories for Dreamy Blossom in the 2007 Palm Beach Grand Classic, Kinloch Brae winning the 2008 Sprint Classic and my own Greys Touch Gold winning the St Petersburg Derby in thrilling fashion.  We are always blessed to be surrounded by friends and family in the winner's circle ... and Fr. John Donovan who is our lucky charm!
